It is a love story that has lasted more than a century – the romance between America and the British monarchy. It’s the other ‘special relationship’ between Great Britain and the USA . And, while American press and public are fascinated by every detail of the Windsor story, many of the royals, even including from Elizabeth II, have fallen in love with the ‘land of opportunity’.
It’s often been a contentious rapport, reflecting the division in American opinion, as well as within the Royal Family. Each successive generation has seen something both serious shifts in public attitudes – and, between the royals, a tussle for possession of that transatlantic territory.
In July 2026, America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of independence from the British crown. It’s an ideal moment to cast our eyes back over this colourful and important slice of our common history. But in more contemporary terms, the events of recent months absolutely beg a consideration of that relationship between the British monarchy, British politics, and the American presidency.
